The
Salford Pilgrimage is an annual event within the Schwenkfelder General
Conference. The 6 Schwenkfelder churches gather at the Salford meetinghouse
in Salford, PA on the first Sunday evening in June to worship together
and to remind themselves of their common spiritual heritage. Before
Schwenkfelders had church buildings, they met in meetinghouses, emphasizing
their commitment to community over church structure.
This
meetinghouse in Salford was built in 1869. It is an old stone structure
with wooden pews and without electricity and plumbing. A potbelly stove
was used to provide the heat. A large pulpit dominates the structure
and is found directly in the center of the building. Members from the
Central Schwenkfelder Church maintain it.
