Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven

Dear Friends,

Well its official, spring has arrived! Sitting here at my computer, I'm imagining a warm sun shining through a clear sky and a cool breeze waving the newly grown leaves. Some of you may be thinking of something similar (or if your allergies tend to speak louder during these months you'd rather not ponder such a scenario). It's time for changing again. Packing the wool sweaters and jackets into cedar chests, preparing for that much-lookedforward-to spring cleaning, and planning for the summer.

Perhaps its also a good time to take a look at the stuff in our lives we've been collecting all winter long. What have we picked up along the way that would have been better left alone? I'm sure that some point in time you've found something buried in the back of the closet and wondered "why was I saving this?" You remember that day it was purchased and how it seemed a good investment, but now its simply adding to the clutter. Is there something in your life like that unneeded item in the closet that would be better left behind?

A favorite musician of mine, David Wilcox, writes in his song Underneath: "but what is it, really, that's keeping me from living a life that's true?" So many times, these things we pick up along the way keep us from a life more fully devoted to God and to the body of Christ. They become a part of our lives in such a way that makes it difficult to let go. When we rely on our own means we think we know the outcome and are therefore safe. But, the scriptures tell us the opposite! "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight" (Proverbs 3:5). When we trust in God and give up the earthly clutter in hopes of heavenly treasures, we may not see the way in front of us. However the promise of God remains that it is when we are in our weakest moments that God's power is made perfect (I Corinthians 12:9).

We've been talking in CE this past year about what it means to love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind. If we are to love God in this way, we have to be willing to go the extra mile and give up those things keeping us from this goal. I hope that in this spring season of new life, you will be encouraged to do some "spring cleaning," trusting in a very patient and loving God who gives us strength when we need it most.

God Bless,

Benjamin Coy
