Celebrate in June
|
"I will pour out my Spirit on all
people."
Joel 2:28
Dear Friends in Christ,
June is an exciting month in the life of the church for what we are celebrating and why we are celebrating it. Let me share with you how important some of these events are.
On Sunday, June 3 we will be celebrating Children's Day and Pentecost. It is interesting how these two events fall together on our calendar this year. OD Pentecost, we remember the time in the
first century AD when the Holy Spirit was poured out on God's people. One result of Pentecost is that he sends the sons of the church out into the world to proclaim the gospel. Hence, together on June 3 with Pentecost and Children's Day, we will celebrate not only the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst us but also how he has sent and is sending the sons of the church out into the world. June 3 will also be a communion service.
The following weekend (June 9-10) is our Homecoming Weekend, as we conclude the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our church building. On Saturday, June 9 we will be having our Homecoming Banquet, starting at 5:30 with hors d'oeuvres and the dinner at 6:30 PM. On Sunday, June 10th (at our one church service of that day - 10:30 AM), we look forward to hear Dr. Jack Rothenberger as he delivers his message, "More Than We Are for the Glory of Christ." This weekend will be a wonderful one as we look back upon our recent past and consider the
future of our church.
The final two weeks in June are also noteworthy. On Sunday, June 17, we look forward to commissioning our youth
work camp trip to Grifton, North Carolina. Last year we sent over 40 from our church to rebuild homes in North Carolina damaged by hurricane Floyd. This year we look forward to commissioning a similar number on that day. Bonnie Rae will be leading the youth for the final time on that trip which will be in early July.
The final week in June will be our Vacation Bible School (June 24-28 from 6:30-8:45 pm). This year's Vacation Bible School is called
"Son Creek Junction." It will explore Biblical truths from the book of Acts and be a lot of fun. We are hoping that this event will help us all raise our understanding of the Bible.
I hope that you will be able to take advantage of many of these special events. They are important for us all as we continue on our Christian pilgrimage as members of this congregation.
With Christian Greetings,
Dr. H. Drake Williams, III
