Schwenkfelder

Most of us try to do some reading over the lazy, hazy days of summer. If you're looking for devotionals reading, try Caspar Schwenckfeld's "Passional and Prayer Book"! This is a selection of prayers by Schwenckfeld, and while the style may be difficult to follow at first, it's worth the effort of persevering through these heart-felt prayers. Here is his "Prayer for Unity of Thought and Understanding in Divine Things."

"O THOU ETERNAL, MERCIFUL GOD! Thou who art a God of peace, love and unity but not of division and diversity, whereby Thou now, in thy right, didst leave this world because she has forsaken Thee, who alone canst create and maintain unity, and has fallen away from Thee on to her own wisdom, especially in those matters which pertain to Thy divine truth and the salvation of the soul, Thou didst permit her to separate and divide in order that she might come to shame with her presumed wisdom in diversity and return to Thee, O Thou lover of unity! We poor sinners, to whom Thou hast graciously granted knowledge of this, beseech and implore Thee that through the Holy Spirit Thou wouldst assemble all that is dispersed and unite and make whole what is divided. Grant us also that we return to Thy unity, to seek Thy sole, eternal truth, to shun all division, that we may become one thought, will, knowledge, mind and understanding, directed toward Jesus Christ, our Lord; that we may, in unity, praise and honor Thee with one voice, Heavenly Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, through the said Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. AMEN."
