18 NAMES OF JESUS

· We are so used to thinking about our Lord being called Jesus Christ that we may forget what his name meant, or that he had many other names.
· The name Jesus comes from the Greek for 'Joshua'. Joshua means 'God is salvation'.
· The name Jesus is very well explained by Matthew: '(Mary) will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins'.

· Put simply: Jesus = Savior.

TITLES OF JESUS

In the Old Testament
1. Immanuel (God with us): 'The virgin will be with child and will give birth
to a son, and will call him Immanuel.' Isaiah 7:14

Matthew quotes this verse from Isaiah, adding after the words, 'and they will call
him Immanuel', the explanation, '…which means, "God with us".'
Matthew 1:23

2. Prince of Peace: Jesus brought God's peace to this world. Isaiah 9:6

3. Anointed One: Psalm 2:2

In the Gospel and Acts

1. Son of God: This shows Jesus' special and unique relationship to God. Mark 1: 1
2. Son of Man: Matthew 8: 20
3. Son of David: Matthew 15: 22
4. Word: John 1: 1
5. Lamb of God: This title was used of Jesus only by John the Baptist, who proclaimed
that Jesus was 'the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!' John 1: 29
6. Christ: Matthew 16: 16
7. Rabbi: John 1: 38
8. Author of Life: Acts 3: 15

In the Book of Revelation

1. Alpha and Omega: Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet,
indicate that Jesus is the first and the last. Revelation 1: 8
2. Lion of Judah: Revelation 5: 5
3. Lamb: Revelation 5: 6 -13
4. Word of God: Revelation 19: 13
5. King of Kings: Revelation19: 16
6. Lord of Lords: Revelation 19: 16
7. Bright Morning Star: Revelation 22: 16
