Jesus' seven "words" from the cross
Jesus said seven things on the cross, often referred to as `the seven words from the cross.' During this Lenten Season, let's reflect on these words from our Lord.
Word 1 Spoken to God the Father, as Jesus was nailed to the cross "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Luke 23:34
Word 2 Spoken to the dying thief who was crucified next to Jesus "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." Luke 23:43
Word 3 Spoken to Mary and John When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing near by, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. John 19:26-27
Word 4 Spoken to God the Father About the ninth hour (3:00 P.M.) Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Matthew 27:46
Word 5 An exclamation "I am thirsty." John 19:28
Word 6 A cry of triumph "It is finished." John 19:30
Word 7 Spoken to God the Father Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. Luke 23:46
