August Message
by Rev. David W. McKinley |
Dear Church Family:
In July we began a series on prayer, that we hope continues to be a blessing
to each of you. In Luke 11:1 we read of the early disciples wondering how they
should go about this basic spiritual task. It says, One day Jesus was praying
in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord,
teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." In the verses that
follow, our Lord gives us what many have come to call The Lord's Prayer. But
it should more appropriately be entitled, "The Disciples' Prayer."
In it, we see the perfect model of how we should address God, ascribe glory
to His name, ask that His divine will be recognized, petition Him with our needs,
request pardon for our sins, seek protection from temptation, and lastly, ascribe
glory to His name. What? Didn't I already mention that one? Yes. That's because
proper prayer should be laden with praise. Someone once taught me that true
prayer ought to be a praise sandwich, or contain praise bookends. In other words,
it should begin and end with praise.
Maybe you have wondered how to pray. I do hope you'll make every effort to be
with us during the Sundays in August to learn more about prayer and its importance
to the Christian life. It is our responsibility to learn how to pray. As Charles
Spurgeon once said, "Prayer must not be our chance work, but our daily
business, our habit and vocation…We must addict ourselves to prayer."
Learning With You,
Pastor David
