Tenebrae Communion Service

Posted on Mar 21, 2017 in Church News, News & Events

On Holy Thursday, April 13th, at 7:30 p.m., Central Schwenkfelder Church will hold a Tenebrae Communion Service which includes readings and music about Christ’s passion.

The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the emotional aspects of the passion story. The service starts out in candlelight. Candles are extinguished one by one with each reading. After Psalm 22 is read, the Christ candle is put out leaving the congregation in near darkness. At this point, the service ends and people leave in silence. Many say this is one of the most moving services they attend throughout the year.

The purpose of the service is to recreate the betrayal, abandonment, and agony of the events; and it is left unfinished, because the story isn’t over until Easter Day.
